My good friend and coworker @reecewilkinson seems to have found a REAL fix for the Exchange 2010 issues with IOS 4. He obtained this profile directly from an engineer at Apple. If you were getting issues (mostly with sending emails), this profile update will likely help you. More specifically, it’s a work-around that disables support for EAS 14 and defaults back to EAS 12.1.

Here’s the exact words on the profile update:

Disables support for Exchange 2010. Exchange 2010 servers will be treated as through were Exchange 2007 servers. NOTE: Requires reboot.

So far, this has yielded huge improvements with our testing. Your mileage may vary. We will be rolling this out to about 200 iphone users in our environment.

Here’s the link (just click with iPhone and install): BlackListExchange2010.mobileconfig

Now if we could only find a way to make the actual phone calls more reliable! As a work-around, here’s is the proper technique for holding the iPhone. Note that there is only one contact point with the hand… and it’s well away from the antennae bands.

I’ve spent the past few weeks working on a complete home theater remodel. The room was basically gutted and everything put in anew. I think the results came out great!

This pic shows the new door between the theater and the game room (also being remodeled a bit). You can also see the floor and crown molding that hides all of the wires. In the corner is a floor-to-ceiling bass trap that I made out of 1×4 lumber, insulation, chicken wire, and fabric. The lights on the front speakers are connect to a remote control switch. The center console will eventually be replaced with something nicer. For now, it holds the center speaker and the remote/game controller chargers.

You can see the riser here along with rope lighting. These lights are on a remote control as well. The side TV-trays will be replaced with end tables as soon as we find some we like. You can also see the other bass trap in the corner.

You can see the new media wall in this pic. The very left is the server cabinet that houses all of my gear. You can see the new door that goes in between the kids play room and the theater as well. Hanging a 36″ door was fairly difficult, but worth it! The media shelves are lit with remote-dimmable track lighting.

Here’s a view of the front row and riser.

There’s still some work to be done though. I want to get new end tables, a sectional sofa for the riser, mic and guitar stands (for rock band), and posters and lighting along the back wall. I might add more bass traps as well, but the sound is pretty tight right now so I may not.

If you’re curious, here’s my equipment list:

W00tStock 2.1 in Portland

On Saturday the 8th, Beck and I went to W00tstock at the Aladdin theater in Portland. We went with many other geeks including Kevin, Val, Chibbs, Joleine, Megan, Kelly, and Keith (of Ebberon fame). Originally announced by Wil Wheaton at PAX 2009, W00tstock is best described as a geek variety show with Wil Wheaton (from ST:TNG), Paul and Storm, Adam Savage (from Myth Busters) and several guest performers. The show was amazing and I’ll definitely go every time it comes to Portland if they do it again. My favorite guest performer was Molly Lewis of course. She’s so humble, yet so talented.

The video below shows the opening intro of W00tstock… you can without a doubt, hear my wife laughing. If you know her, you can’t miss that shrill cackle (I love you babe). Wil also said that Portland is one of his favorite cities in the world… word, Wil, word.

A Visit with Dee

That very same evening, Dee flew in from London. W00tstock didn’t end until almost 11:30 and I picked her up with Chibby and Joleine from her hotel. We then we back to the Hot Cake House to meet with the rest of our group for some late night grub. Yum yum! Val and Dee hit it off once they realized they shared tastes in perfume. Once our bellies were full, I took Dee back to her hotel and checked her out so she could upgrade to Chez Goings.

We took her to the Saturday Market (on Sunday) and had a great time! Dee spoiled the kids with gifts of jewelry and ice cream… they just loved her!

I was watching the JoCo videos from his PAX performances this morning and it reminded me of Molly Lewis, a great ukulele player he had on stage with him. A quick Googling directed me to her website where I discovered she had a video log series called “Vlogging Molly”. Awesome!

So I watched this video:

In the video, she answers some questions (from fans presumably). One of the questions is “John McCain or Barack Obama?” She answers with some cheesy, but funny, songs that clearly indicate her preference for Barack. I agree Molly. Now, here’s where things get real. I scroll through her comments and notice that three people, accounting for 100% of the comments on that page, uniquely misspelled Barack Obama’s name.

How hard is it to know how to spell the President of the United States name? Further, how hard is it to google how to spell his name if you aren’t sure. Sigh.

Anyhow, despite the fact that her fans are lazy and can’t spell, Molly’s a great musician and pretty funny vlogger. Check her out.
